"If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brothers and sisters, and besides, even his own life, he cannot be My disciple." Luke 14:26
"he that loves his life shall lose it and he that hates his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal." (John 12:25)
"So likewise whosoever he be of you that forsakes not all that he has cannot be my disciple."
(Luke 14:33)"Love not the world neither the things of the world. If any man loves the world the love of the father is not in him." (1Jo 2:15)
"Whoever is a friend of the world is the enemy of God." (James 4:4)
"Everyone who forsakes (renounces, cuts off all attachments) to houses, relatives, brothers and sisters, fathers, mothers, children and nations for my sake shall receive a hundredfold and shall inherit everlasting life." (Mt.19:29)
As long as you love or have any attachments to this world you will be like a man rowing a boat that is tethered to the dock. He cannot reach the Father until he cuts the rope completely.
"Whosoever he be of you that forsakes not all that he has cannot be my disciple." (Luke 14:33) Whoever does not hate his family, "He cannot be My disciple." (Luke 14:26)
What a Strange Gospel, love your enemies, but hate your family and your own life. Those who love the world will reject it, but those who love Father, will understand it.

Hello just wanted to drop a line regarding this posting. According to what I've read and studied from Jews that are beleivers in Christ. They explained that hate in Jewish language is not viewed how we view it rather it is a term used to show preference. In this case I beleive Jesus shows that in order to love him and serve him we must choose to make him the priority which to some is a odd view to some unfamiliar with Jewish language but another light to view this in is you can't love the gift of family and life more than the giver of life and family (God/Christ).
The point of loving God above your love or hate for others I think is the focus on loving your enemies and "hating"(making of less priority) your family. If you study Jesus's other teaching you'll also note he rebuke the behavior of some realigious Jews because their focus on realigious funding and endorsing a young forsake taking care of the needs of his father and mother to fund the religion was absolutely unjust and wrong.
Hope this brings some light to some of the jewish custom and how they wrote and expressed themselves in the Bible.
Thanks,
Mike
Hi Mike,
good comments thanks. I think you are correct, but the word hate is so powerful that it jolts us. I think we need to be jolted loose from our love of earth life if we are to ever let go of it completely. And if we don't let go completely we'll never make it to the kingdom.
